Friday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time (YEAR 2013)

Meditation on Today's Scripture:
Jesus warns his disciples about the problem of the "closed mind" that refuses to learn new things. He used an image familiar to his audience new and old wineskins. In His times, wine was stored in wineskins, not bottles. New wine poured into skins was still fermenting. The gases exerted gave pressure. New wine skins were elastic enough to take the pressure, but old wine skins easily burst because they became hard as they aged. Just as there is a right place and a right time for fasting and for feasting, so there is a right place for the old as well as the new. Jesus says the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old. How impoverished we would be if we only had the Old Testament or the New Testament, rather than both. Jesus gives us wisdom so we can make the best use of both the old and the new. He doesn't want us to hold rigidly to the past and to be resistant to the new work of his Holy Spirit in our lives. He wants our minds and hearts to be like the new wine skins open and ready to receive the new wine of the Holy Spirit.
Word of the Day...
John 14:23 Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him."
Prayer ...
Holy God, we know Jesus came to earth and obeyed your will. Give us discernment so that our obedience will not simply be the obedience of your words, but a longing to live according to you will. We long to honor you because you have done so much to save us. Thank you. In Infant Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

33And they said to him, "The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink." 34 And Jesus said to them, "Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days." 36 He told them a parable also: "No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment; if he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, 'The old is good'.
