Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent

1 Peter 2:2-3: Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.
Prayer ...
Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us and saving us. We really want to mature in your grace. Bless us today as we seek to pattern holy habits and fill myself spiritually with the things that will help us grow. But Holy God, we know that true growth only comes from you, so we ask you to strengthen us by your Spirit as we pursue your character. In Infant Jesus' mighty name we pray. Amen.

Scripture: John 8:31-42
31Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free." 33They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, `You will be made free'?" 34Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin. 35The slave does not continue in the house for ever; the son continues for ever. 36So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed. 37I know that you are descendants of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you. 38 I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father." 39 They answered him, "Abraham is our father." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do what Abraham did, 40but now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth which I heard from God; this is not what Abraham did. 41You do what your father did." They said to him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God." 42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I proceeded and came forth from God; I came not of my own accord, but he sent me.
Meditation on Today's Scripture:
The freedom which Jesus offers his followers is freedom from the power of sin, Satan, and the worldly power of those who oppose God and his ways. We are powerless to set ourselves free from bondage to Satan, sin, and death. A redeemed slave is not completely free until all of his chains and weights have been broken and destroyed. The Lord Jesus alone has the power to discharge us from every chain and burden that would keep us in bondage to sinful habits and unkind desires. Are there any chains - any sinful patterns, damaging attitudes, and addictive behavior - that you need to be released from? Allow the Lord Jesus to release you and bring you healing, pardon, and freedom to walk in his way of love and truth. The Lord Jesus sets us free from slavery to our own self-interest and sinful desires in order to set us free for a joy-filled life of love and repair for his kingdom. Paul the Apostle reminds us that Christ has won freedom for each one of us – not to serve ourselves or do as we please - but rather to please the Lord and to provide our neighbors in love for their sake. Do we accept and believe Christ's word of truth, love, and liberty for your life? Loving Infant Jesus, write your words of love and truth upon our heart and make us a diligent student and a worthy disciple of your word.
