Memorial: Saint John of the Cross, priest and doctor of the Church

Luke 1:26-28: God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."
Prayer ...
Heavenly Father, we've prayed many times: "Be with us Lord, we cannot live without you. We cannot bear, to take one step alone." Father, we need your abiding presence to face the challenges of life. As you have upheld your children through the ages, we are thankful to greet each day knowing that we will not face it alone. In Infant Jesus' name. Amen.

Scripture: Matthew 11:16-19
16"But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market places and calling to their playmates, 17"We piped to you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn." 18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, "He has a demon"; 19the Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, "Behold, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!" Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds."
Meditation on Today's Scripture:
Jesus' message of the kingdom of God is good news to those who will listen and it creates true joy and spiritual freedom for them, but it is also a caution for those who decline to obey. Why did the message of John the Baptist and the message of Jesus meet with deaf ears and confrontation? It was out of enviously and spiritual blindness that the scribes and Pharisees qualified John the Baptist's austerities to the devil and they attributed Jesus' table fellowship with sinners as proofs that he must be a fake messiah. They succeeded in trying God's plan for their lives since they had closed their hearts to the message of John the Baptist and now to Jesus' message. What can make us spiritually uninteresting and slow to hear God's voice? Like the generation of Jesus' time, our age is marked by indifference and contempt, particularly in regards to the things of heaven. Unresponsiveness dulls our ears to God's voice and to the good news of the gospel. Only the retiring of heart can find joy and favor in God's sight. Is our life in tune with Jesus's message of hope and salvation? And do we know the joy of obedience to God word? Loving Infant Jesus, open our ears to hear the good news of your kingdom and set our heart free to love and serve you joyfully. May nothing keep us from following you wholeheartedly.
