Wednesday Third Week Lent

Wednesday of the Third Week of Lent

Psalm 119:165: Great peace have they who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.
  PRAYER FOR THE DAY ...
Heavenly Father, thank you that we don't have to face today or tomorrow with doubts about our basic values and without a sense of your will for our life. Stir in us a love for your will and your word so that nothing can make us stagger. Empower us by your Spirit and guide us by your truth so that we may more perfectly reflect your character. In Infant Jesus' name we thank you for hearing my prayer. Amen.

Short reflection on Today's Gospel: (Matthew 5:17-19)
Jesus' approach towards the law of God can be shortened in the great prayer of Psalm 119: "Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day." For the people of Israel the "law" could refer to the Ten Commandments or to the five Books of Moses, called the Pentateuch, which give details the commandments and decrees of God for his people. The "law" also referred to the whole instructions or way of life which God gave to his people. The Jews in Jesus' time also used it as a narrative of the oral or scribal law. Unnecessary to say, the scribes added many more things to the law than God planned. That is why Jesus often predestined the scribal law. It placed burdens on people which God had not proposed. Jesus, however, made it very clear that the core of God's law – his commandments and way of life, must be satisfied.
