Friday Third Week Advent

Matthew 4:4: Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."
Heavenly Father, True and Faithful God, through your Holy Spirit create in us a hunger for your Word that is much more necessary for our life than our hunger for food. We confess that at times we have been distracted by the ordinary things of life and have not sought your Word and have not nourished our soul as fully as we could. Please forgive us as we re-commit ourselves to be more attentive to your leading and your truth through your Word and by your Spirit. In the name Infant Jesus we pray. Amen.

Meditation on Today's Gospel: (John 5:33-36)
Jesus portrays John the Baptist as an "ablaze and shining lamp" who gave light to those around him. A lamp does not provide light by itself. It has to first be lit. John's message gave warmness because his heart was lit by the fire of God's love and reality. Just as natural light dismisses the darkness and makes the way clear, so God's word carries light to drive out the spiritual darkness in our lives and to open the way to liberty and joy in God's kingdom. John's light pointed his hearers to the way of regret and to God. His message repeats the words of the prophet Isaiah: "salvation and liberation will come to those who keep justice and do morality". The prophets saw from far away how God would send his "anointed one", the Messiah, to bring liberation and freedom to those crushed by sin and domination. Jesus bears witness in his own person and in the powerful works which he carries out that God's deliverance has truly come to those who believe him as Savior of Israel and savior of humankind. The Lord Jesus gives us the fire of his Holy Spirit, not only to cleanse our hearts and minds, but to change our lives into living torches of his saving love and mercy. Do we allow the light of God's truth and love to excel in our heart and mind?
