Meditation on Today's Gospel: (Mark 1:1-8)
The prophet tells again us that God’s kingdom is open to those who are teachable and open to the word of God. Through their submission to God's word and commandments, they get not only wisdom and peace for themselves, but they, in turn become a blessing to their children and their children as well. Jesus warns the creation of his day to heed God's word prior to it is too late. He assesses teachers and scholars, and those who have been taught, with obstinate playmates who refuse to follow any sort of way or instruction. It was out of jealously and religious blindness that the scribes and Pharisees credited John the Baptist's severity to the devil and they attributed Jesus' table fellowship with sinners as proof that he must be a false messiah. They were successful doing in frustrating God's plan for their lives since they had closed their hearts to the communication of John the Baptist and now to Jesus' message. What can make us morally dull and slow to hear God's voice? Like the generation of Jesus' time, our time is marked by unresponsiveness and disregard especially in view of the things of heaven. Unresponsiveness dulls our ears to God's voice and to the good news of the gospel. Only the modest of heart can find joy and favor in God's sight. Is our life in adjust with Jesus's message of expectation and salvation?
