Meditation on Today's Gospel: (Matthew 8:5-17)
Why did Jesus not only affectionately receive a Roman centurion but praise him as a replica of faith and confidence in God? In the Roman world the place of centurion was very important. He was an official in charge of a hundred soldiers. In a certain sense, he was the spine of the Roman army, the cement which held the army jointly. The centurion who came Jesus was not only brave, but faith- filled as well. He risked the mockery of his cronies by seeking help from a wandering preacher from Galilee, and well as ridicule from the Jews. However, he approached Jesus with confidence and humbleness. He was an unusual man because he loved his slave. In the Roman world slaves were treated like animals somewhat than people. The centurion was also an extraordinary man of confidence. He wanted Jesus to heal his much-loved slave. Jesus commends him for his faith and straight away grants him his request. Are we willing to suffer ridicule in the practice of our faith? And when we need help, do we approach the Lord Jesus with expectant faith?
